 Legendre Island, Dampier Archipelago
Karratha Aero Club (KAC) was
established in 2001 by a group of aircraft enthusiasts in the Pilbara town
of Karratha. It has developed from a core group all with a keen interest
in flying, varying from novice pilots to instructors, to become the most
northern flying club in Western Australia. The club had its first fly-in
at Roebourne in July 2002 with a spot-landing competition and BBQ. In
November 2002 several members and aircraft flew to Coral Bay for a weekend
R&R.
A few of the club
members have their own aircraft, ranging from RV-6s to a Debonair.
Currently the club hires a Cessna 172 from a local charter company but
hopes to have its own aircraft in the near future.
Flying in the Pilbara
offers a number of challenges, not least due to the harsh spectacular
terrain and a combination of desert and tropical weather. The dry weather
guarantees VFR flying almost all year round (average 15 days rain per
year!) while the long distances between towns makes flying an ideal means
of getting from place to place. The Dampier Archipelago and Millstream
National Park also offer some great sight seeing from the air. Whales,
manta rays, sharks and turtles are commonly seen around the
islands.
The year to come has
plans for further fly-ins, comps and trips away. To learn more about us or
